The Shanghai Mahjong Scoring System

7 & 8 Fans = 5 Renmins from every player (to be paid immediately)
9 & 10 Fans = 10 R
11 = 15 R
12 = 20 R
13 = 25 R

and so on (an additional 5R for every extra fan). A kung gets you a bonus of 5 Rs, and a hidden kung (I think) gets you 10 Rs.

"Fan" Chart

Your seat season tile (ie E = Spring etc) = 1 fan
Season tile of the round = 1 fan
Pon of Wind of the round = 1 fan
Every tile that is the SAME as the revealed tile (so not the jokers that are one above or below it) are each worth 1 fan
Winning with a tile after a kung replacement = 1 fan (I think)
Pon of seat wind = 1 fan
Pon of dragon tiles (including the flower tiles) = 1 fan
Going out yourself (which in this game has to happen at least 90% of the time!) = 1 fan
The last tile that you collect is needed to make the second tile for your pair (can be a wild tile) = 1 fan
Winning with a pick up after a kung (and I would guess also after a flower replacement) is worth 1 fan.
Having only the same suit as the jokers plus honour tiles = 2 fans (ie if the revealed tile is the 2 bamboos, and you finish with a hand containg just bamboo and honours)
Having only one suit plus honours = 4 fans
Any 3 of the 4 dragons (flowers are dragons - snapdragons?) = 6 fans
Having only one suit and no honours = 6 fans
Having all three of the remainder matching tiles as the revealed tile = 6 fans
Having all 4 of the wild tiles that are one above or one below the wild tile indicator, then that is worth 8 fans. All 4 winds = 8 fans
Having no wild tiles in your hand = 8 fans
All four season tiles = 8 fans
Having only honours = 10 fans

A hidden Kung is worth an extra 10 Renmin (so double a revealed kung).

You are allowed to ron with the following hands:-
* A hand with no wild tiles.
* A hand purely of one suit, with no honours (wild tiles are okay)
* A hand consisting solely of honours (wild tiles are okay)
* A hand with 3 or 4 pons/kungs of dragons. (Again wild tiles are okay)
NB: The flower tiles count as dragons, and so it can be with any 3 of the 4.
* A hand with 4 pons/kungs of all the winds.
If someone is 'ronned' on any of the above hands, they have to pay the full amount. The other two players pay half, rounded up to the nearest 5 Renmin. This does not include the bonus money for kungs, which everyone has to pay in full.

A Couple of Notes on Etiquette...

The winner declares how many fans they have got. As long as they are not claiming more than they actually have, that is what they are paid. One player tonight claimed for 16 fans for his hand, when he in fact had 18. This mistake cost him about 2 quid in lost revenue.

It is okay to let someone take over your seat to play for a while with their money (or yours if you're feeling generous.)

A game should only finish when all 4 rounds have been played through.

Black tea is drunk during play (typically a Lipton tea bag in a glass which remains there throughout. You keep topping it up with hot water, until you have really got your money's worth ;-). Coffee is almost acceptable. Beer, and other real refreshments is frowned upon.

When making your wall, you take 3 tiles in each hand, put them together, and then do it again. You put the second 6 on top of the first. You do the same thing again in front of your mini wall, and then taking 3 stacks in either hand, you add these to each end of your mini wall. You do this again, and thus have your 18 tile wall, this should be pushed into the middle at an angle, with the left-hand side sloping towards the table edge.

You should smoke heavily throughout (I'm not sure if this essential, but it has happened every time I've played here, and every time I've watched ;-)
